Tree stand hunting is far and away the most popular and, for most hunters the most successful method of harvesting a whitetail buck.

Over the years I’ve hunted out of ground stands, tree stands and blinds with great success, but for me, no hunting experience matches the exhilaration of going one on one with a wily, dominant buck on his own turf.

Iowa's harvest reporting system shows it is on track with 2011 numbers. At the end of the first harvest last year, hunters in Iowa had reported similar numbers 2012 coming in at about 60,000.

Electronics are all around us these days — even in the deer stand or blind. The hunter's head pops up does a sweep and straight back to the cellphone or portable game system — to each his or her own. However, once you use that device to warn another hunter of approaching game or to coordinate a drive you have committed an offense that could land you in jail, cause the loss of your electronics, weapon and other associated gear.

The following is a tip issued by the Kansas Department of Wildlife, but applies in all states.

A controversial coyote elimination event has opponents flinging death threats against the organizers and their families. The owners of Gunhawk Firearms, a gun store in Los Lunas, New Mexico announced it would hold a coyote-killing contest at the beginning of November. Since then, the store has been bombarded with threats, death threats and other menacing messages.

Hunters Reminded to Practice Treestand Safety

Most hunters are aware of the need to safely handle their firearms, but too often hunters overlook basic treestand safety. According to the Treestand Manufacturer's Association (TMA), one out of three treestand hunters will fall from a treestand during their lifetime and require medical treatment. Furthermore, 75 percent of treestand falls happen to hunters between the ages of 30 to 60 years old.

Hunters enjoy a short black bear hunting season in Maryland, but the five-day season has been a hit ever since it was reintroduced eight years ago. Out of the 4,027 hunters that applied for a permit this year, only 693 were randomly chosen to be awarded a license through a lottery drawing. That’s 693 hunters of all ages and sizes with a plethora of different methods for harvesting a black bear.
