The Arizona Game and Fish Department has extended the application deadline for Arizona's 2013 elk and pronghorn antelope hunts to Thursday, Feb. 14, by 7 p.m. (MST).

We are in that in-between time – deer season is over, turkey hasn’t started, you’ve been to the range, you have your son or daughter signed up and taking the Outdoor Roadmap online hunter education course, now what do you to enjoy the outdoors. It can happen fast. You hear footsteps in the leaves. It might be that gobbling turkey you raised checking out your position silently, looking for the hen you pretended to be. Key on the sound of footsteps while also being safe - turkeys and hunters walking make similar noises at times.

When my son came of hunting age here in Michigan, I immediately signed him up for Hunter Education.  At that time an online hunter education course was unheard of, unlike today where you can save the time and gain convenience by taking hunter education at home on your own computer.  So off Sean and I went to the local hunt club, Hunters Creek in Metamora, Michigan for a weekend of classroom hunter education followed by field activities.

In addition to twelve tips on hunting rabbit, here is a bonus 'tip' for you - a recipe to celebrate your successful hunt with a friend:

Fried rabbit for Two

Cut a rabbit into serving pieces and parboil in a pot with enough water to cover.

Add one hot pepper and four sliced cloves of garlic.

Parboil until tender, remove from heat, drain off the water.

Once he's been unsuccessfully hunted, the coyote will play very hard to get.  Decide and prepare in advance to outwit and wait-out the challenge and remember that the same land features and tactics that work to the coyote's advantage can also work for your success.  Little details matter a lot - Calling less, scouting more, adjusting gear to hunt from a distance and paying close attention to detail can mean the difference between fur collecting and going home cold, frustrated and empty-handed for the wintertime coyote hunter...He's called 'wily' for
